How to Read Airport Information

A guide to understanding airport codes, locations, coordinates, elevation, time zones and other airport information.

An airport information page can contain several different identifiers and geographic fields. Understanding what each field means makes it easier to use airport reference data.

IATA code

The IATA code is normally a three-letter identifier commonly used in passenger travel.

ICAO code

The ICAO identifier normally contains four letters and is widely used in aviation operations.

Latitude and longitude

These fields identify the geographic position of the airport.

Elevation

Airport elevation describes the airport's height relative to the relevant reference level.

Time zone

The time-zone field indicates the local time arrangement associated with the airport.

Location

City, state, county and country fields provide geographic context for the airport.
